How Subject Scaling Works

Why some subjects contribute more to your ATAR than others.

Scaling adjusts raw study scores to fairly compare students across subjects with different difficulty levels and cohort strengths.

Scales Up

Specialist Maths, Methods, Chemistry, Physics, Latin, Languages

Scales Down

Studio Arts, Media, Physical Education, Further Maths, Business Mgmt

A high score in a low-scaling subject is still better than a mediocre score in a high-scaling one. Choose subjects you enjoy and can excel in.

How the Aggregate Is Calculated

The formula that turns your study scores into an ATAR.

Step 1.English subject

Must include at least one English subject in your top four.

Step 2.Best 4 at 100%

Your four highest scaled study scores count in full.

Step 3.5th & 6th at 10%

Your remaining subjects contribute 10% of their scaled score.

Aggregate = Best 4 Scaled Scores + 10% of 5th + 10% of 6th

Disclaimer

Important limitations of this estimate.

  • This calculator provides estimates only, not official ATAR predictions.
  • Actual ATAR is calculated by state admission centres (VTAC, UAC, QTAC, TISC, SATAC) using proprietary algorithms.
  • Scaling factors are based on historical averages and change yearly with cohort data.
  • Non-VCE states (HSC, QCE, WACE, SACE) use a simplified normalisation model without subject scaling — treat those results as rough ballpark estimates only.
  • Consult your school's VCE coordinator or state admissions authority for accurate guidance.
