How to Calculate Percentage — 3 Core Formulas

The three fundamental percentage formulas that cover almost every scenario

1. Find X% of a number (e.g. discounts, tips, tax)

Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number

Example: 15% of ₹2,000 = (15 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = ₹300

2. Find what % one number is of another (e.g. exam scores)

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

Example: 45 out of 60 = (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%

3. Find the whole when you know the part (reverse)

Whole = (Part × 100) ÷ Percentage

Example: 30 is 15% of what number? = (30 × 100) ÷ 15 = 200

Percentage Off Calculator: How to Calculate Discounts

Sale prices, coupon codes, and clearance calculations

The most common everyday percentage calculation is working out a discount. Whether it's a 20% off sale, a seasonal clearance, or a coupon code — here are the three things you might need to find:

Discount amount (how much you save)

Savings = Original Price × (Discount% ÷ 100)

Sale price (what you pay)

Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

Original price (reverse — if you know the sale price)

Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

For the reverse scenario (finding original from sale price), use the Reverse tab → Original Price Before Discount.
