What Is a Birth Chart?

A cosmic snapshot of the sky at the moment of your birth

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets in the 12 zodiac signs and 12 astrological houses. Think of it as a cosmic snapshot that astrologers use to understand personality traits, life themes, and potential strengths and challenges.

The Big Three

Your Sun sign (core identity), Moon sign (emotional nature), and Rising sign or Ascendant (how others perceive you). Together, they provide a much more nuanced picture than your Sun sign alone.

This calculator uses NASA JPL ephemeris data via the astronomy-engine library to compute accurate planetary positions for any date between 1800 and 2100. It supports both the Tropical (Western) and Sidereal (Vedic/Lahiri) zodiac systems.

How to Read Your Birth Chart

Planets, signs, and houses — the three building blocks

Reading a birth chart follows a simple framework: Planets represent what energy is at play, Signs describe how that energy expresses itself, and Houses show where in your life it manifests.

Planets (What)

Each planet governs a different part of life. The Sun rules identity, the Moon rules emotions, Mercury rules communication, Venus rules love and values, Mars rules drive and energy.

Signs (How)

The zodiac sign a planet occupies colors how that energy is expressed. Venus in Aries expresses love boldly, while Venus in Pisces expresses love through compassion and imagination.

Houses (Where)

The 12 houses represent different life areas. The 1st house is self-image, the 7th is partnerships, the 10th is career. Where a planet falls shows which life area it influences most.

Aspects

Aspects are the angles between planets. A conjunction (0°) blends energies, a trine (120°) creates flow, a square (90°) creates tension that drives growth, and an opposition (180°) highlights a need for balance between two forces.

Understanding the 12 Houses

Each house governs a specific area of your life

1st House

Self, appearance, first impressions

2nd House

Finances, values, possessions

3rd House

Communication, siblings, short travel

4th House

Home, family, roots, inner world

5th House

Creativity, romance, children, play

6th House

Health, daily routines, service

7th House

Partnerships, marriage, contracts

8th House

Transformation, shared resources, intimacy

9th House

Philosophy, higher education, long travel

10th House

Career, public image, authority

11th House

Friendships, groups, hopes, community

12th House

Spirituality, solitude, the subconscious

Whole Sign House System

This calculator uses the Whole Sign house system, where each house corresponds to an entire zodiac sign. The 1st house is always the complete sign of your Ascendant. Whole Sign is one of the oldest house systems and has seen a strong revival in modern astrology due to its clarity and consistency.

Key Considerations

Things to keep in mind when reading your birth chart

Birth time matters

The Ascendant (Rising sign) changes roughly every 2 hours. Without an accurate birth time, house placements and the Rising sign cannot be calculated. If you don’t know your birth time, check your birth certificate or hospital records.

Tropical vs. Sidereal

Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac (aligned to the seasons/equinoxes), while Vedic/Indian astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac (aligned to the fixed stars). They differ by about 24 degrees. Neither is more “correct”; they are different frameworks.

Retrograde planets

When a planet appears to move backward in the sky (retrograde), it is marked with an “R” in your chart. Retrogrades are normal astronomical phenomena and occur regularly for all planets except the Sun and Moon.

Birth location accuracy

Your geographic coordinates affect the Ascendant and house placements. Select the city closest to your actual birthplace for the most accurate results.
