What Is CTR (Click-Through Rate)?

Understanding the most important metric in digital advertising

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the percentage of people who click on your ad, link, or content after seeing it. It is the single most important metric for measuring how engaging and relevant your content is to your audience. A high CTR means your message resonates — a low CTR means it is being ignored.

CTR is used across every digital channel: Google Search Ads, Display Ads, Facebook & Instagram Ads, Email Marketing, YouTube Ads, LinkedIn Ads, and organic search results. Each channel has its own benchmark for what constitutes a "good" CTR — a 2% CTR on Google Search is average, while 2% on Facebook Ads is excellent.

The CTR Formula

CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100

Example: 150 clicks ÷ 10,000 impressions × 100 = 1.50% CTR

How to Calculate CTR

Every CTR formula — including reverse calculations

Calculate CTR

CTR (%) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100

Calculate Required Clicks

Clicks = ⌈(Target CTR% × Impressions) ÷ 100⌉

Rounded up (ceiling) to ensure the target CTR is met or exceeded.

Calculate Required Impressions

Impressions = ⌊(Clicks ÷ Target CTR%) × 100⌋

Rounded down (floor) to ensure the target CTR is met or exceeded (fewer impressions = higher CTR).

How to Calculate CTR in Google Sheets / Excel

Use this simple formula in any spreadsheet:

=A2/B2

Where A2 contains your clicks and B2 contains your impressions. Format the cell as a percentage to display the CTR value. For example, 150 in A2 and 10,000 in B2 will show 1.50%.

CTR vs Other Marketing Metrics

How click-through rate relates to CPM, CPC, CPA, and Conversion Rate

CTR → CPM

CTR measures engagement; CPM measures cost per 1,000 impressions. A high CTR with a low CPM is the ideal combination. Use our CPM Calculator to optimize impression costs.

CTR → ROAS

CTR affects your Return on Ad Spend. Better CTR means more clicks for the same budget — potentially improving ROAS. Use our ROAS Calculator to measure profitability.

CTR → CPV

For video ads, CTR and CPV (Cost Per View) are closely related. A strong CTR on a video thumbnail drives more views. Try our CPV Calculator for video campaigns.

CTR → Engagement Rate

On social media, engagement rate (likes, comments, shares) complements CTR. High CTR + high engagement = winning content. See our Engagement Rate Calculator.

How to Improve Your Click-Through Rate

7 proven strategies to increase CTR across all channels

Write Compelling Ad Copy

Use action verbs, numbers, and emotional triggers. Address the user’s pain point directly. For search ads, include the keyword in the headline. Strong ad copy can increase CTR by 50–200%.

A/B Test Everything

Test headlines, descriptions, images, CTAs, and landing pages. Run 2–3 variations simultaneously and let data decide the winner. Even small copy changes can swing CTR by 10–30%.

Use Ad Extensions (Google Ads)

Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, and call extensions increase your ad’s screen real estate. Ads with extensions see 10–15% higher CTR on average.

Target the Right Audience

Refine your audience targeting — narrow demographics, interests, and behaviors often produce higher CTR because the message is more relevant. Use remarketing lists for warm audiences.

Optimize for Mobile

Over 60% of clicks come from mobile devices. Ensure your ads and landing pages load fast on mobile. Use mobile-preferred ad copy with shorter headlines.

Write Better Subject Lines (Email)

For email marketing, the subject line is your ad headline. Use personalization, curiosity gaps, and urgency. Keep it under 50 characters. Emojis in subject lines can boost open rates by 20–30%.

Improve Landing Page Relevance

Google Ads factors landing page experience into your Quality Score. A relevant, fast-loading landing page improves your ad rank and can lower your CPC — indirectly boosting effective CTR and ROI.

Common CTR Calculation Mistakes

Pitfalls that cause marketers to misjudge their performance

Confusing Impressions with Reach

Impressions count every time your content is displayed, including multiple views by the same user. Reach counts unique users. CTR calculated with reach instead of impressions will appear artificially inflated.

Comparing CTR Across Different Channels

A 2% CTR on Google Search Ads is average; a 2% CTR on Facebook Ads is excellent. Comparing CTR across channels without accounting for benchmarks leads to incorrect conclusions about campaign performance.

Ignoring Viewability

An impression is counted even if the ad wasn’t fully visible. Only 50–70% of display ad impressions are actually viewable. Your "true" CTR based on viewable impressions may be significantly higher than reported.

Optimizing for CTR Instead of Conversions

A high CTR with zero conversions is a waste of budget. Always evaluate CTR alongside conversion rate, CPA, and ROAS. Clickbait headlines boost CTR but kill conversion rates.

Not Segmenting by Device

CTR on mobile is typically higher than desktop for search ads, but lower for display ads. Segmenting by device reveals where your audience is most engaged and helps allocate budget effectively.
