What Is a Working Days Calculator?
Count only business days between two dates, excluding weekends and holidays
A working days calculator (also called a business days calculator) counts the number of workdays between two dates by excluding weekends and optionally public holidays. It answers questions like "How many working days between two dates?" and "How many business days until a deadline?"
This is essential for project planning, HR leave calculations, SLA tracking, and any scenario where only working days matter. Unlike a simple date difference, the workday calculator filters out non-working days based on your region's weekend pattern.
Workday Formula
Working Days = Total Days − Weekend Days − Holidays on Weekdays
Holidays that fall on weekends are not double-counted.

When Do You Need a Working Days Calculator?
Professional scenarios where business day counts are essential
Project Management
Calculate available working days for sprints, milestones, and delivery schedules. Gantt charts and project plans rely on workday counts, not calendar days.
HR & Leave Management
Track employee leave in working days, calculate notice periods, determine probation end dates, and plan annual leave utilization reports.
SLA & Compliance
Measure service level agreement response times in business days. Calculate regulatory filing deadlines, audit periods, and compliance windows.
Banking & Finance
Settlement periods (T+1, T+2), payment processing windows, interest accrual periods, and trade execution timelines use business day counts.
Legal & Government
Court filing deadlines, appeal periods, government response windows, and statutory notice periods are measured in working days.
Education & Training
Calculate instructional days in a semester, training program durations, and academic calendar working days for school planning.
Common Mistakes in Working Day Calculations
Avoid these errors when counting business days
Dividing total days by 5
Estimating workdays as total_days × 5/7 is inaccurate because it doesn't account for which day of the week the range starts and ends. Always count actual weekdays for precision.
Ignoring regional weekend patterns
Not all countries observe Saturday-Sunday weekends. UAE, Saudi Arabia, and several other nations use Friday-Saturday. Using the wrong pattern can be off by several days per month.
Double-counting weekend holidays
If a public holiday falls on a Saturday (already a non-working day), subtracting it again underestimates working days. The calculator handles this correctly.
Forgetting half-day or regional holidays
Some countries have half-day holidays or regional holidays that vary by state/province. Add all relevant holidays for accurate results.
Working Days Calculation Methodology
How the algorithm counts business days accurately
The working days calculator iterates through each day in the date range and checks whether it falls on a weekend day (based on your selected pattern). Days matching the weekend pattern are excluded. If holidays are provided, those are also excluded — but only if they fall on a working day.
- Step 1: Count total calendar days between start and end dates
- Step 2: Identify and count all days matching the weekend pattern (e.g., every Saturday and Sunday)
- Step 3: Identify holidays that fall on working days (not weekends) and count them
- Step 4: Working days = Total days − Weekend days − Weekday holidays
This matches Excel's NETWORKDAYS() and NETWORKDAYS.INTL() functions. The .INTL variant supports custom weekend patterns, just like this calculator.
