What is Gematria?
An ancient system of assigning numerical values to letters
Gematria is an alphanumeric code of assigning a numerical value to a name, word, or phrase based on its letters. It originated as an Assyro-Babylonian-Greek system of numerology and was later adopted into Jewish culture, where it became deeply intertwined with the study of the Torah and Kabbalah. The word "gematria" is generally held to derive from the Greek word geometria ("geometry").
In traditional Hebrew gematria, each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet is assigned a numerical value. The first ten letters (Alef through Yod) are valued 1 through 10, the next eight letters (Kaf through Tsadi) increase by tens from 20 to 90, and the final four letters (Qof through Tav) represent 100 through 400. Words or phrases that share the same numerical value are considered to have a meaningful connection.

English Ordinal (Standard)
The simplest cipher: A=1, B=2, C=3 … Z=26. Each letter is assigned its position in the English alphabet. This is the most widely used English gematria system.
Full Reduction (Pythagorean)
Based on the Pythagorean system used in numerology. Each letter's ordinal value is reduced to a single digit (1–9) by summing its digits. For example, K=11 becomes 1+1=2, and T=20 becomes 2+0=2.
Reverse Ordinal
The reverse of the standard cipher: Z=1, Y=2, X=3 … A=26. This cipher provides a mirror perspective on letter values and often reveals complementary patterns.
Reverse Full Reduction
The reverse ordinal values reduced to a single digit (1–9). For example, A=26 in reverse ordinal becomes 2+6=8.
English Gematria
Each letter's ordinal position is multiplied by 6: A=6, B=12, C=18 … Z=156. This cipher is used by gematrix.org and creates larger values that align with certain numerological traditions.
Jewish Gematria
Maps English letters to their Hebrew numerical equivalents: A=1 through I=9 (units), K=10 through S=90 (tens), T=100 through Z=500 (hundreds), with J=600, V=700, and W=900 as extended values. This is the system used by gematrix.org for "Jewish" gematria.

Five Hebrew letters have final forms (sofit) used when they appear at the end of a word. In the standard system (Mispar Hechrachi), final forms carry the same value as their regular counterparts. In the extended system (Mispar Gadol), they are assigned higher values: Kaf sofit=500, Mem sofit=600, Nun sofit=700, Pe sofit=800, and Tsadi sofit=900. This calculator uses the standard system.
