Electricity bills in India are calculated using a slab-based tariff system set by each state's electricity regulatory commission. Your bill has four main components: (1) Energy Charges — based on units (kWh) consumed, calculated across progressive slabs where higher consumption attracts higher rates, (2) Fixed/Demand Charges — a monthly charge based on your connected load in kW, (3) Electricity Duty — a state tax (typically 5–16%) on energy and fixed charges, and (4) Fuel Surcharge — an additional charge in some states to cover fuel cost variations.

A unit of electricity equals 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is the energy consumed when a 1,000-watt appliance runs for 1 hour. For example, a 100W bulb running for 10 hours consumes 1 unit (100W × 10 hours = 1,000 Wh = 1 kWh). Your electricity meter records total kWh consumed, and the difference between current and previous readings gives your monthly consumption.

Each Indian state has its own State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) that sets tariff rates based on local factors: cost of power generation and procurement, transmission and distribution losses, cross-subsidization between consumer categories, state government subsidies, and infrastructure maintenance costs. States like Goa and Tamil Nadu have lower domestic rates due to subsidies, while Maharashtra and West Bengal tend to have higher rates.

Connected load is the total wattage of all electrical appliances in your premises (sum of ratings of all appliances). Sanctioned load is the maximum power supply approved by your electricity provider — it's usually mentioned on your electricity bill. Fixed charges are calculated based on connected/sanctioned load. If your actual usage exceeds the sanctioned load, you may face penalties or need to upgrade your connection.

Fixed charges (also called demand charges or minimum charges) are a monthly fee based on your connected load in kW, charged regardless of how much electricity you actually consume. For domestic consumers, this typically ranges from ₹15–120 per kW per month depending on the state and DISCOM. Even if you consume zero units in a month, you still need to pay fixed charges. These cover the cost of maintaining the electricity infrastructure to your premises.

Electricity duty is a state-level tax levied on electricity consumption, calculated as a percentage (typically 0–16%) of your energy charges and fixed charges combined. All consumers — domestic, commercial, and industrial — pay electricity duty. The rate varies by state: Maharashtra charges 16%, Delhi 5%, Madhya Pradesh 6%, Jharkhand 15%, while Goa is exempt. It's collected by the electricity board and paid to the state government.

A 1.5-ton inverter AC running 8 hours daily consumes approximately 300-360 units per month (1,200W average × 8 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000). A non-inverter AC of the same capacity consumes 400-500 units. Factors affecting consumption: room size, insulation, outside temperature, thermostat setting (24°C vs 18°C can double consumption), and the star rating of the AC. A 5-star 1.5-ton inverter AC is the most efficient choice for Indian conditions.

The average Indian household consumes 150-250 units per month, resulting in a bill of ₹800–2,500 depending on the state. Urban households with AC typically consume 400-800 units (₹3,000–8,000/month). The national average per-capita electricity consumption is about 100 units/month. States with the highest bills include Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Rajasthan, while states like Tamil Nadu and Goa offer subsidized rates for lower consumption slabs.
