What Is the Lo Shu Grid?

An ancient Chinese numerology system based on a 3×3 magic square

The Lo Shu Grid (also spelled Luo Shu) is one of the oldest numerological tools in the world, originating from ancient China over 4,000 years ago. According to legend, a turtle emerged from the River Lo carrying a pattern of dots on its shell that formed a 3×3 magic square — where every row, column, and diagonal adds up to 15.

In numerology, the Lo Shu Grid maps your date of birth digits onto this grid. The presence, absence, and repetition of numbers reveal your personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, and life tendencies. It is widely used in Chinese, Indian, and Western numerology traditions.

How to Calculate Your Lo Shu Grid

Step-by-step guide with a worked example

1

Write your full date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format. For example: 15/03/1990.

2

Extract all individual digits: 1, 5, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9, 0. Remove any zeros — they have no position in the grid.

3

Your remaining digits are: 1, 5, 3, 1, 9, 9. Place each digit in its corresponding cell on the Lo Shu Grid.

4

Count how many times each number (1-9) appears. Numbers appearing multiple times are amplified; missing numbers indicate gaps.

5

Check each row, column, and diagonal. If all three numbers in a line are present, it forms a Present Arrow (strength). If all are missing, it forms an Absent Arrow (area for growth).

6

Calculate your Driver Number (birth day reduced to single digit), Conductor Number (full DOB reduced), and Kua Number (for Feng Shui directions).

Worked Example: DOB 15/03/1990

Digits: 1, 5, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9, 0 → Remove zeros → 1, 5, 3, 1, 9, 9

Grid: 1 appears , 3 appears , 5 appears , 9 appears

Missing: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8

Driver: 15 → 1+5 = 6

Conductor: 1+5+0+3+1+9+9+0 = 28 → 2+8 = 10 → 1

Common Mistakes & Misconceptions

Things to keep in mind when interpreting your Lo Shu Grid

Including zeros in the grid

Zero has no position in the Lo Shu Grid. The grid only maps digits 1-9. Zeros in your date of birth are simply excluded from the analysis.

Thinking missing numbers are always negative

Missing numbers indicate areas for growth and development, not fixed weaknesses. Awareness of gaps helps you consciously develop those traits.

Ignoring repeated numbers

Repeated numbers are just as significant as missing ones. Having a number appear 3-4 times can indicate excess energy in that area that may need balancing.

Confusing Driver and Conductor numbers

The Driver Number (from birth day) represents your personality in the first half of life, while the Conductor Number (from full DOB) influences the second half.

Using name-based calculations instead of DOB

The traditional Lo Shu Grid uses ONLY date of birth digits. While some modern practitioners include name numbers, the original system is purely DOB-based.
