What Is a Nakshatra?

The 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology

A Nakshatra (also called a birth star or lunar mansion) is one of 27 equal segments of the ecliptic in Vedic (Hindu) astrology. Each nakshatra spans exactly 13 degrees and 20 minutes of arc (13°20′), dividing the full 360° zodiac into 27 parts. The word "Nakshatra" comes from Sanskrit, meaning "that which does not decay."

Why Nakshatras Matter

  • Determine your personality traits, emotional nature, and spiritual path
  • Used for naming ceremonies (Namakarana) based on pada syllables
  • Essential for marriage matching (Kundli Milan) and compatibility
  • Timing important events (Muhurta) and Vimshottari Dasha predictions

Your birth nakshatra is determined by the position of the Moon in the sidereal zodiac at the exact moment of your birth. Since the Moon moves through roughly one nakshatra per day (completing all 27 in about 27.3 days), knowing your birth time helps pinpoint your exact nakshatra and pada (quarter).

How to Calculate Your Nakshatra

Using NASA JPL ephemeris data for precision

Calculating your nakshatra requires determining the Moon's exact sidereal longitude at the moment of your birth. This calculator uses NASA JPL ephemeris data via the astronomy-engine library for scientifically accurate positions.

Calculation Steps

  1. Convert your local birth time to UTC using timezone data
  2. Calculate the Moon's tropical (astronomical) ecliptic longitude
  3. Apply the Lahiri Ayanamsa correction to convert to sidereal longitude
  4. Divide the sidereal longitude by 13°20′ to find the nakshatra (0-26)
  5. Calculate the pada by dividing the position within the nakshatra by 3°20′

Formula

Sidereal Longitude = Tropical Longitude − Ayanamsa
Nakshatra Index = floor(Sidereal Longitude ÷ 13.333°)
Pada = floor((Sidereal Longitude mod 13.333°) ÷ 3.333°) + 1

The Lahiri Ayanamsa (approximately 24° in 2024) accounts for the precession of the equinoxes — the slow drift between the tropical and sidereal zodiac systems. This correction is essential for accurate Vedic astrology calculations.

Nakshatra vs Rashi (Moon Sign)

Understanding the two lunar classification systems

Both Nakshatras and Rashis (Moon signs) are determined by the Moon's position, but they divide the zodiac differently and serve different purposes in Vedic astrology.

Nakshatra (27 Divisions)

  • Each spans 13°20′
  • More precise personality analysis
  • Used for Dasha timing, naming, compatibility
  • Each has a unique deity and ruling planet
  • 4 padas per nakshatra for further refinement

Rashi / Moon Sign (12 Divisions)

  • Each spans 30°
  • Broader personality classification
  • Used for general horoscope predictions
  • Shared with Western zodiac system
  • 2.25 nakshatras fit in each rashi

Each Rashi contains 2.25 Nakshatras. For example, Aries (Mesha) contains all of Ashwini, all of Bharani, and the first pada of Krittika. This means two people with the same Moon sign can have very different nakshatras, leading to quite different personality profiles.

Understanding Nakshatra Padas

The four quarters that add precision to your birth star

Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas (quarters), each spanning 3°20′. Padas add an additional layer of precision to nakshatra analysis, connecting each quarter to a specific Navamsa (D9) sign.

Why Padas Matter

  • 27 Nakshatras × 4 Padas = 108 segments, a sacred number in Vedic tradition
  • Each pada connects to a Navamsa sign, adding that sign's influence to your nakshatra's energy
  • Ashwini Pada 1 falls in Aries Navamsa (amplifying fire and initiative), while Pada 4 falls in Cancer Navamsa (adding emotional depth)

Pada and Baby Naming

  • The first syllable of a baby's name is chosen based on their Nakshatra Pada
  • Each pada has specific syllables believed to harmonize the child's name with their cosmic blueprint
  • This practice is part of the Namakarana (naming ceremony) tradition

Your pada also influences compatibility calculations. In Ashtakoot (8-factor) matching used for marriage compatibility, the nakshatra and pada together determine several compatibility factors including Ganam, Nadi, Yoni, and Varna matching.
