How Does Name Numerology Work?

Understanding the vibration of your name

Name numerology is the study of the numerical vibration hidden within your name. Every letter in the alphabet corresponds to a specific number, and the sum of all the letters in your name reveals your Expression Number (also called Destiny Number) — the most important name-based numerology number.

The Core Principle

Your name is more than a label — it carries a unique numerical frequency. By separating vowels and consonants, numerology reveals not just your destiny (all letters), but your inner desires (vowels = Soul Urge) and outer personality (consonants = Personality Number).

Unlike Life Path numbers which require your date of birth, name numerology works with your name alone. This makes it ideal for analyzing business names, baby names, pen names, and even alternate spellings to find the most favorable vibration.

Pythagorean vs Chaldean Name Numerology

Two systems, different letter-to-number mappings

Pythagorean (Western)

  • Sequential mapping: A=1, B=2 ... I=9, J=1, K=2 ...
  • Uses numbers 1 through 9 for letter assignment
  • Most widely used system globally
  • Based on the Greek mathematician Pythagoras
  • Best for Western names and modern usage

Chaldean (Ancient)

  • Sound-vibration mapping (not sequential)
  • No letter is assigned the number 9
  • Popular in Vedic and Indian traditions
  • Based on ancient Babylonian practices
  • Best for Indian names and spiritual analysis

This calculator shows results from both systems side by side, so you can compare and see which system resonates more with your experience. Master numbers (11, 22, 33) are preserved in both systems.

The Three Name Numbers

What each name-based number reveals

Expression Number (Destiny Number)

All letters in your name

The most important name number. It reveals your natural talents, abilities, and the goals you are meant to achieve in life. Calculated from every letter in your name, it represents your overall destiny and potential.

Soul Urge Number (Heart's Desire)

Vowels only (A, E, I, O, U)

Your innermost desires, motivations, and what truly drives you at a soul level. The vowels in your name carry the inner vibration — what you want most out of life, even if you do not always show it outwardly.

Personality Number

Consonants only

How the world perceives you — your outer mask. The consonants represent the qualities you show to others, the first impression you make, and the persona you project in social situations.

How to Calculate Name Numerology by Hand

Step-by-step example using the Pythagorean method

1

Write out the full name you want to analyze. Use your birth certificate name for personal numerology, or the exact brand name for business numerology.

2

Look up each letter in the Pythagorean (or Chaldean) chart and write its number below it.

3

For the Expression Number: Add ALL letter values per word, reduce each to a single digit (or master number), then add and reduce again.

4

For the Soul Urge: Add only VOWELS (A, E, I, O, U). For Personality: Add only CONSONANTS.

5

If you reach 11, 22, or 33 during reduction — STOP. These are Master Numbers with special significance.

6

Compare both Pythagorean and Chaldean results to get a complete picture of your name's vibration.

Example: Expression Number for “SARAH WILLIAMS”

S=1, A=1, R=9, A=1, H=8 → 1+1+9+1+8 = 20 → 2+0 = 2

W=5, I=9, L=3, L=3, I=9, A=1, M=4, S=1 → 5+9+3+3+9+1+4+1 = 35 → 3+5 = 8

Total: 2 + 8 = 10 → 1 (The Leader)

Example: Soul Urge for “SARAH WILLIAMS” (vowels only)

Vowels: A=1, A=1 (SARAH) + I=9, I=9, A=1 (WILLIAMS)

SARAH vowels: 1+1 = 2

WILLIAMS vowels: 9+9+1 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1

Total: 2 + 1 = 3 (The Communicator)

Example: Business Name “APPLE”

A=1, P=7, P=7, L=3, E=5 → 1+7+7+3+5 = 23 → 2+3 = 5

Expression Number: 5 (The Adventurer)

Dynamic, versatile, embracing change — fitting for a tech innovator.

Common Mistakes in Name Numerology

Avoid these errors for accurate name analysis

Using your married or current name instead of birth name

Always use the name on your birth certificate — it carries your original vibration. Analyze your married name separately using the comparison feature.

Mixing Pythagorean and Chaldean systems

Each system has its own letter-to-number mapping. Mixing them gives incorrect results. This calculator lets you compare both side by side.

Reducing master numbers (11, 22, 33)

Master numbers should NOT be reduced further. If your calculation reaches 11, 22, or 33, that is your final number.

Ignoring middle names or initials

Include ALL names as written on your birth certificate. Omitting your middle name changes the calculation.

Thinking one spelling change fixes everything

Analyze all three numbers (Expression, Soul Urge, Personality) — a change that improves one may worsen another.
