How Does Numerology Work?

Understanding the ancient science of numbers

Numerology is the study of numbers and their influence on human life. It assigns numerical values to letters in your name and digits in your birth date, then reduces them to single digits (or master numbers 11, 22, 33) to reveal insights about your personality, life purpose, and potential.

The Core Principle

Every letter has a number. Every number has a vibration. Your name and birthday create a unique numerical blueprint that reveals your strengths, challenges, and life direction.

This calculator computes six core numbers from your full birth name and date of birth. Each number offers a different lens into your character — from your life's purpose (Life Path) to how the world sees you (Personality).

Pythagorean vs Chaldean Numerology

Two systems, different mappings, same goal

Pythagorean (Western)

  • Sequential mapping: A=1, B=2 ... I=9, J=1, K=2 ...
  • Uses numbers 1–9 for letter assignment
  • Most widely used system globally
  • Based on the Greek mathematician Pythagoras

Chaldean (Ancient)

  • Sound-vibration mapping (not sequential)
  • No letter is assigned the number 9
  • Popular in Vedic and Indian traditions
  • Based on ancient Babylonian practices

Chaldean Letter Chart

Both systems preserve Master Numbers (11, 22, 33) — these are not reduced to single digits because they carry special significance as amplified versions of their root numbers.

Understanding Your Core Numbers

What each of the six numbers reveals about you

Life Path Number

Date of Birth

Your most important number. It reveals your life's purpose, the path you walk, and the lessons you're here to learn. Derived from your complete date of birth.

Expression Number

Full Name (all letters)

Also called the Destiny Number. It reveals your natural talents, abilities, and the goals you're meant to achieve. Calculated from every letter in your full birth name.

Soul Urge Number

Vowels in Name

Also called the Heart's Desire. It reveals your innermost desires, motivations, and what truly drives you at a soul level. Derived from the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) in your name.

Personality Number

Consonants in Name

How the world perceives you — the outer you. It reveals the first impression you make and the qualities you show to others. Calculated from consonants in your name.

Birthday Number

Day of Birth

A special talent or gift you carry in this lifetime. It adds a unique flavor to your Life Path and reveals a specific ability or quality that makes you stand out.

Personal Year Number

Birth Date + Current Year

Your current year's theme and energy. Numerology operates in 9-year cycles, and your Personal Year tells you what to focus on, what to expect, and how to navigate this year.

How to Calculate Numerology on Paper

Step-by-step example using the Pythagorean method

1

Choose the Pythagorean or Chaldean chart. Look up the number for each letter in your name.

2

For Life Path: Take your full date of birth (e.g., March 15, 1990). Reduce month, day, and year separately to single digits.

3

For Expression: Add up the values of ALL letters in your full name, reduce to a single digit.

4

For Soul Urge: Add only the VOWELS (A, E, I, O, U). For Personality: Add only the CONSONANTS.

5

When reducing, if you reach 11, 22, or 33 — STOP. These are Master Numbers and are not reduced further.

6

Your Personal Year = reduced birth month + reduced birth day + reduced current year.

Worked Example: Life Path for March 15, 1990

Month: March = 3 → 3

Day: 15 → 1 + 5 = 6

Year: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1

Total: 3 + 6 + 1 = 10 → 1

Life Path Number: 1 (The Leader)

Worked Example: Expression for “JOHN SMITH”

J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5 → 1+6+8+5 = 20 → 2+0 = 2

S=1, M=4, I=9, T=2, H=8 → 1+4+9+2+8 = 24 → 2+4 = 6

Total: 2 + 6 = 8 (The Powerhouse)

Common Mistakes & Myths

Things to keep in mind when using numerology

Reducing master numbers (11, 22, 33) to single digits

Master numbers should NOT be reduced. If your calculation reaches 11, 22, or 33, stop there. These carry amplified energy and special significance.

Using your married name instead of birth name

Numerology is based on the name given at birth (as on your birth certificate). Your birth name carries your original vibration. You can calculate your married name separately for insight into how it affects you.

Adding all digits of a date at once

The correct method is to reduce month, day, and year SEPARATELY first, then add the reduced values. Adding all digits at once can miss master numbers that appear in the components.

Thinking one number defines everything

Your complete numerology profile includes multiple numbers, each revealing a different aspect of your life. The Life Path is most influential, but Expression, Soul Urge, and other numbers add important nuance.

Believing numerology predicts your future

Numerology reveals tendencies and potential, not fixed outcomes. Think of it as a map of your natural inclinations — you always have free will to chart your own course.
