How Parlay Betting Works

Combine multiple bets for larger payouts

A parlay (also called an accumulator or multi-bet) combines two or more individual bets into a single wager. All selections must win for the parlay to pay out. In exchange for the higher risk, parlays offer significantly larger payouts than placing each bet individually.

Core Formula

Parlay Odds = Leg₁ × Leg₂ × … × LegN (all in decimal)

For example, three -110 favorites (1.909 decimal each) combine to 6.96 decimal odds (+596 American) — turning a $100 bet into a $696 payout. Each leg you add multiplies the combined odds, creating exponentially larger potential payouts but lower win probability.

Parlay Odds Formula & Conversion

How to convert odds and calculate parlay payouts step by step

Step 1: Convert to Decimal Odds

All odds formats must be converted to decimal before combining. Decimal odds represent the total return per $1 wagered.

Positive American: (odds ÷ 100) + 1 → +150 = 2.50

Negative American: (100 ÷ |odds|) + 1 → -110 = 1.909

Fractional: (num ÷ den) + 1 → 3/2 = 2.50

Step 2: Multiply All Legs

Multiply the decimal odds of each leg together. This is the key difference from straight bets — parlay odds multiply, they don't add.

Example: 1.909 × 1.909 × 2.50 = 9.11 combined decimal

Step 3: Calculate Payout & Profit

Multiply your stake by the combined decimal odds to get the total payout. Subtract your stake for the profit.

Payout = $100 × 9.11 = $911.16

Profit = $911.16 − $100 = $811.16

Implied Probability = (1 ÷ 9.11) × 100 = 10.98%

Parlay Probability & House Edge

How implied probability and vig compound across legs

The implied probability of a parlay is the product of each leg's individual probability. Because sportsbooks bake vig (margin) into every leg, the house edge compounds with each leg you add.

8177.0+17,600$17,7000.56%
10645.4+64,440$64,5400.15%

All legs at standard -110 odds (1.909 decimal). Actual payouts vary by leg odds.

The vig compounds: A single -110 bet has ~4.5% vig. A 3-leg parlay at -110 per leg has ~13% compounded vig, and a 5-leg parlay exceeds 20%. The bigger your parlay, the larger the sportsbook's built-in edge.

Implied Probability Formula

Parlay Probability = (1 ÷ Combined Decimal Odds) × 100

Common Parlay Mistakes to Avoid

Pitfalls that cost bettors money on parlays

Adding too many legs

Each leg reduces your win probability dramatically. A 2-leg parlay at -110 has a 27% chance; a 5-leg drops to under 4%. Stick to 2–3 legs for realistic win rates.

Ignoring the compounding vig

Sportsbooks take their margin on each leg. In a 4-leg parlay, you're paying vig four times. The implied probability always overstates the true probability — the gap grows with more legs.

Treating parlays as addition

Parlay odds multiply, they don't add. A 3-leg parlay at -110 each is not 3× the payout — it's approximately +596 combined. The exponential math is what makes parlays attractive but risky.

Not understanding push rules

If one leg pushes (ties), most books remove that leg and recalculate. A 4-team parlay with one push pays as a 3-team parlay. Always check your sportsbook's push policy.

Betting parlays as a strategy

Parlays are high-variance entertainment, not a sustainable edge. Sharp bettors limit parlay exposure and focus on positive expected value (+EV) single bets with proper bankroll management.
