How PayPal Fees Work

The formula behind every PayPal transaction

PayPal charges a percentage of the transaction amount plus a fixed fee for each payment received. The exact rates depend on the transaction type, whether the payment is domestic or international, and how the buyer pays.

Fee Formula

PayPal Fee = (Amount × Rate%) + Fixed Fee

You Receive = Amount − PayPal Fee

US Fee Schedule (2026)

Rates sourced from PayPal's business fees and consumer fees pages. Estimates US transaction fees only — does not cover currency conversion (3–4%), instant transfer withdrawal (1.75%), chargebacks ($20 fee), or negotiated merchant rates.

How to Calculate PayPal Fees

Manual calculation steps for any transaction type

1

Identify the rate

Find the percentage and fixed fee for your transaction type (e.g., G&S = 2.99% + $0.49, QR Code = 2.29% + $0.09). For international, add 1.5% to the percentage.

2

Multiply and add the fixed fee

Multiply the transaction amount by the percentage rate (as a decimal), then add the fixed fee. For example: ($100 × 0.0299) + $0.49 = $3.48.

3

Subtract to get your net — or reverse for charging

Subtract the fee from the sent amount to get what you receive. To reverse-calculate what to charge to net a target amount, divide (desired net + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − total rate) — or use the What to Charge mode above.

Invoice fees vary by payment method — 2.99% for cards, 3.49% for PayPal/Venmo/guest checkout. Micropayments are cheaper than G&S for amounts under ~$20 due to the lower fixed fee.

About This Calculator

What this tool covers — and what it doesn't

eBay and PayPal fees

This calculator estimates PayPal transaction fees only. eBay charges separate final value fees (which vary by category) that are not included here. For total eBay costs, use this for the PayPal portion and check eBay's fee page.

PayPal instant transfer fees

This covers transaction fees — what PayPal charges to process a payment. It does not cover withdrawal fees: moving money from PayPal to your bank instantly costs 1.75% of the amount. Standard bank transfers (1–3 business days) are free.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Save money and stay protected

Use "What to Charge" mode

Adding 2.99% to your price doesn't cover the fee — the percentage applies to the higher total. Use reverse calculation for exact amounts.

QR codes save money

QR codes (2.29% + $0.09) beat G&S (2.99% + $0.49) for every amount. On a $50 sale, that's $0.81 saved per transaction.

Cross-border fees stack up

International adds 1.5% surcharge. G&S goes from 2.99% to 4.49%. Plus PayPal's currency conversion adds another 3–4% markup.

Never use F&F for business

Friends & Family has no buyer protection. PayPal may freeze accounts misusing it for business. Always use Goods & Services.
