What Is a Pond Calculator?

Overview of the tool and why accurate pond volume matters.

A pond calculator estimates how much water your pond holds and what size liner you need. Knowing your pond's volume in gallons or liters is essential for fish stocking, water treatment dosing, pump sizing, and liner purchasing. This calculator supports 5 pond shapes and gives you volume, liner dimensions, fish capacity, and fill time in one place.

Pond Volume Formulas by Shape

Core formulas used for each pond type. Volume in cubic feet × 7.481 = US gallons.

Rectangular Pond

Volume = Length × Width × Depth × 7.481 gal/ft³

Round / Circular Pond

Volume = π × (Diameter/2)² × Depth × 7.481

Oval Pond

Volume = π × (Length/2) × (Width/2) × Depth × 7.481

Kidney-Shaped Pond

Volume = (NarrowW + WideW)/2 × Length × Depth × 7.481 × 0.8

Irregular / Freeform

Volume = Surface Area × Depth × 7.481

Liner Size Formula

Liner = Pond Dimension + 2 × Depth + 2 × Edge Overlap

Conversions: 1 ft³ = 7.481 US gal · 1 US gal = 3.785 L · 1 m³ = 264.17 US gal · Water weighs 8.34 lbs per gallon.

Why You Need to Know Your Pond Volume

Practical reasons why accurate volume is critical for pond owners.

Fish stocking

Overstocking leads to poor water quality, disease, and fish death. Koi need at least 250 gallons each; goldfish need 20 gallons each.

Water treatment dosing

Beneficial bacteria, algaecides, dechlorinators, and pond salt are all dosed per gallon. Wrong volume means over- or under-treating.

Pump & filter sizing

Koi ponds need full-volume turnover per hour. Lightly stocked water gardens can run at half that rate. The calculator shows a min–max GPH range based on stocking level.

Liner purchasing

Buying the wrong liner size wastes money or leaves your pond unprotected. The liner formula accounts for depth and edge overlap.

Common Mistakes When Calculating Pond Volume

Avoid these errors that can throw your estimate off significantly.

Mixing units

Entering feet for length but inches for depth gives wildly wrong results. Use the same unit system for all measurements.

Measuring to the top, not waterline

Ponds typically have 2–4 inches of freeboard. Measure to the water level, not the rim.

Ignoring irregular shape

A kidney or freeform pond is not a rectangle. Using length × width overestimates volume by 40% or more.

Forgetting depth variation

If your pond is 1 ft at one end and 3 ft at the other, use the average depth (2 ft), not the maximum.

Undersizing liner

Always add extra for depth and edge overlap. The liner must cover the bottom, go up all sides, and extend past the edge for anchoring.
