Example 1: Raw Score Estimation (PSAT/NMSQT)

Suppose you got 40 correct in Reading & Writing and 33 correct in Math on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Raw to scaled lookup: 40 RW correct → ~570 scaled. 33 Math correct → ~600 scaled.
Total score: 570 + 600 = 1,170 out of 1,520.
Percentile: 1,170 places you around the 80th percentile among 11th-grade test-takers.
SAT equivalent: PSAT/NMSQT shares a scale with the SAT, so your estimated SAT score is ~1,170 (out of 1,600).

Example 2: National Merit Selection Index

Using the same scores: RW: 570, Math: 600.

Selection Index = (2 × Reading & Writing + Math) ÷ 10

= (2 × 570 + 600) ÷ 10 = (1,140 + 600) ÷ 10

= 1,740 ÷ 10

= 174 (below Commended cutoff of 208)

More competitive example: RW: 710, Math: 710 → SI = (2 × 710 + 710) ÷ 10 = 2,130 ÷ 10 = 213. This clears the Commended cutoff (208) and would qualify as a Semifinalist in some states.
