PSAT Score Calculator
Calculate your estimated PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9 score from raw answers. See section scores, percentiles, SAT estimate, and (for PSAT/NMSQT) National Merit Selection Index.
Use this PSAT score calculator to estimate your scaled score from Reading & Writing and Math correct answers. For PSAT/NMSQT, it also estimates your National Merit Selection Index and compares your result with cutoff ranges.
Cutoffs shown are Class of 2026 actual values compiled by Compass Prep from NMSC data — the most recent full state-by-state table released. Current-cycle projections may differ. Source: Compass Prep, compiled from NMSC data.

How to Use This Calculator
Two modes depending on what scores you have available
Our PSAT score calculator has two input modes to accommodate different use cases — use Raw Correct Answers before you receive your official score report, or Official Section Scores after scores are released.
Raw Correct Answers mode
Enter the number of questions you got right in Reading & Writing (out of 54) and Math (out of 44). The calculator looks up estimated scaled scores from College Board practice test conversion tables and computes percentiles, a rough SAT equivalent, and (for PSAT/NMSQT) the National Merit Selection Index.
Best before you receive your official score report.
Official Section Scores mode
If you already have your official section scores (160–760 for NMSQT/PSAT 10, or 120–720 for PSAT 8/9), enter them directly. The calculator computes your total score, percentiles, SAT equivalent, and (for PSAT/NMSQT only) your National Merit Selection Index — all without raw-score conversion.
Faster and more precise with your score report in hand.
For PSAT/NMSQT users, select a state from the dropdown to check your estimated National Merit Semifinalist status. Cutoffs shown are Class of 2026 actual values compiled by Compass Prep from NMSC data — cutoffs vary each year.
Worked Examples
Walk through the calculations step by step
Example 1: Raw Score Estimation (PSAT/NMSQT)
Suppose you got 40 correct in Reading & Writing and 33 correct in Math on the PSAT/NMSQT.
- Raw to scaled lookup: 40 RW correct → ~570 scaled. 33 Math correct → ~600 scaled.
- Total score: 570 + 600 = 1,170 out of 1,520.
- Percentile: 1,170 places you around the 80th percentile among 11th-grade test-takers.
- SAT equivalent: PSAT/NMSQT shares a scale with the SAT, so your estimated SAT score is ~1,170 (out of 1,600).
Example 2: National Merit Selection Index
Using the same scores: RW: 570, Math: 600.
Selection Index = (2 × Reading & Writing + Math) ÷ 10
= (2 × 570 + 600) ÷ 10 = (1,140 + 600) ÷ 10
= 1,740 ÷ 10
= 174 (below Commended cutoff of 208)
About These Estimates
Data sources, limitations, and when to use official scores
Important: Because the Digital PSAT is multistage adaptive, two students with the same number of correct answers can receive different scaled scores. This calculator provides a useful approximation (±20–40 points), not an official score.
For the most accurate raw-to-scaled conversion, use the official scoring tables in the College Board Bluebook app. National Merit cutoff data shown is from the Class of 2026 actual cutoffs compiled by Compass Prep from NMSC data — semifinalist cutoffs are set by NMSC each year and current-cycle projections may differ. See Compass Prep for the latest.
How Is the PSAT Score Calculated?
Understanding the raw-to-scaled score conversion process
The PSAT/NMSQT has two sections: Reading & Writing (54 questions) and Math (44 questions), for a total of 98 questions. Each correct answer earns one raw score point with no penalty for wrong answers.
The College Board uses equating and Item Response Theory (IRT) to convert raw scores to scaled scores. Because the Digital PSAT is adaptive, Module 2 difficulty adjusts based on Module 1 performance — two students with the same number correct can receive different scaled scores depending on item difficulty. Estimates in this calculator are averaged from published practice tests and may vary by ±20–40 points.

All three PSAT versions are digital and adaptive. The PSAT/NMSQT is the only version that qualifies students for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
How to Calculate PSAT Index Score for National Merit
Understanding the Selection Index and qualification thresholds
The PSAT Selection Index is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) to identify Commended Students and Semifinalists. It is calculated from your EBRW and Math section scores on a 48–228 scale.
Selection Index Formula
Selection Index = (2 × Reading & Writing + Math) ÷ 10Range: 48–228
Top ~1% in each state. Cutoffs vary by state — check the Compass Prep cutoff table for the most recent state-by-state numbers. About 16,000 students qualify nationally.
Top ~3% nationally. The Commended cutoff was 208 in the most recent published cycle. Recognized with a letter of commendation. About 34,000 students qualify.
Tips for Improving Your PSAT Score
Evidence-based strategies for better performance
Answer every question
There's no penalty for guessing on the Digital PSAT. Never leave a question blank — a random guess gives you a 25% chance of gaining a point.
Focus on Module 1
Module 1 determines Module 2 difficulty. Strong Module 1 performance unlocks the harder Module 2, which gives access to higher scaled scores.
Use official practice materials
The College Board's Bluebook app has official Digital PSAT practice tests that mirror the real test format and difficulty level.
Learn the Desmos calculator
The Digital PSAT includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator for all Math questions. Practice with it before test day to save time.
Treat it as SAT prep
The PSAT closely mirrors the SAT format. Strong PSAT preparation translates directly to better SAT performance. Use your PSAT results to identify weak areas for SAT study.
