How Shirt Sizes Work

Understanding the different shirt sizing systems

Shirt sizing uses two different systems depending on the type of shirt. Dress shirts use a precise neck and sleeve measurement (e.g., 15.5/34), while casual shirts and t-shirts use alpha sizing (S, M, L, XL) based on chest measurements. Women's shirts are typically sized by bust measurement and mapped to US numeric sizes (0–22) or alpha sizes.

International sizing varies. For men's dress shirts, US and UK sizes are the same (neck in inches), while EU sizes use neck circumference in centimeters. For women's shirts, this calculator converts between US, UK, and EU numeric sizes.

How to Take Accurate Measurements

Step-by-step measurement guide for finding your shirt size

1. Neck (Men's Dress Shirts)

Place the tape at the base of your neck where a collar would sit. Wrap it around comfortably — you should be able to fit two fingers between the tape and your neck. Enter your exact measurement; the calculator rounds to the nearest half inch.

2. Chest (T-Shirts & Casual)

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under the armpits. Keep it level and snug but not tight. This measurement determines your alpha size (S, M, L, XL).

3. Sleeve Length

Bend your arm slightly. Have someone measure from the center back of your neck, across the shoulder point, down the outside of the arm to the wrist bone. Round to the nearest inch.

4. Tips for Accuracy

Measure over a light t-shirt, not a thick sweater. Stand straight with arms at sides. Have a friend help with sleeve and back measurements. Measure twice for consistency.

Dress Shirts vs Casual Shirts

Understanding the two main shirt sizing systems

Men's shirts use two completely different sizing systems depending on the formality of the garment. Understanding the difference is essential for getting the right fit.

Dress Shirts (Neck/Sleeve)

Dress shirts are sized by two measurements: neck circumference and sleeve length. A size like "15.5 / 34" means a 15.5-inch neck and 34-inch sleeve. This precise sizing allows for a tailored collar and sleeve fit.

Casual / T-Shirts (Alpha)

T-shirts and casual shirts use alpha sizes (S, M, L, XL) based on chest measurement. These sizes are less precise and vary between brands. A Medium typically fits a 38–41 inch chest.

Women's Shirts (US Numeric)

Women's shirts are sized by bust measurement, mapped to US numeric sizes (0–22) or alpha sizes (XXS–3XL). International equivalents differ: a US 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 38.

Fit Preference Matters

The same measurements can yield different sizes depending on fit preference. Slim fit runs tighter with less ease, while relaxed fit adds extra room. Always consider how you want the shirt to drape.

Common Shirt Sizing Mistakes

Avoid these pitfalls when determining your shirt size

Measuring the neck too tight

A common mistake is wrapping the tape snugly around the neck like a choker. You should be able to fit two fingers between the tape and your neck. A too-tight neck measurement leads to uncomfortable collars.

Using dress shirt size for t-shirts

Dress shirt sizes (e.g., 15.5/34) and t-shirt sizes (S/M/L) are completely different systems. A size 16 neck doesn't mean you're a Large in t-shirts — it depends on your chest measurement.

Ignoring brand variation

Alpha sizes (S, M, L) vary significantly between brands. A Medium from one brand may fit like a Large from another. Always check the specific brand's size chart and use your actual measurements for comparison.

Not accounting for fit preference

A slim-fit shirt in the same size will feel very different from a relaxed-fit shirt. Consider how you want the shirt to fit — close to the body, standard, or roomy — before choosing your size.

About the Shirt Size Calculator

How shirt size calculation works using body measurements

This calculator determines your shirt size by matching your body measurements against standard size charts compiled from major shirt manufacturers including Brooks Brothers, Charles Tyrwhitt, Hanes, and Gildan. It supports both men's sizing (dress shirts by neck/sleeve and casual shirts by chest) and women's sizing (by bust measurement). Results include alpha sizes, numeric sizes, and international equivalents across US, UK, and EU systems. The calculator also offers a height and weight estimation mode for quick approximate sizing.
