How Shoe Size Conversion Works

Understanding the relationship between foot length and international sizing standards

Shoe sizing varies across countries because each system was developed independently. The key to accurate conversion is foot length in centimeters — the one universal measurement that all systems ultimately reference.

How the Converter Works

This converter uses empirical lookup tables cross-referenced against the Brannock device, ISO 9407, and major brand charts. Each source size maps to a foot length in cm, which is then matched to the nearest standard size in every other system.

JP / MX = foot length (cm) directly. KR = foot length in mm. BR ≈ US + 2 (approximation).

International Size Systems Explained

How shoe sizing works in different regions around the world

US / Canada

Based on the Brannock device. Men's and women's scales differ by ~1.5 sizes. Half sizes available. Most common system in North America.

Brannock device • Half-size increments

UK / India / Australia

Uses the barleycorn system (1/3 inch per size). UK men's is typically 0.5-1 size less than US men's. India and Australia follow UK sizing.

Barleycorn system • 8.46mm per size

EU (Continental Europe)

Uses the Paris point system (6.67mm per size). Technically unisex — same number scale for men and women. Used across most of Europe.

Paris points • 6.67mm per size

CM (Foot Length)

Not a regional system but the universal base measurement. Your foot length in centimeters is what all other systems ultimately convert from.

Universal reference • Most accurate

Japan (JP)

Size equals foot length in centimeters. The simplest system — a JP 27 means a 27 cm foot. Recommended by ISO 9407.

ISO 9407 • Size = foot cm

Mexico (MX)

Also uses centimeters like Japan. An MX 27 means a 27 cm foot. Part of the Mondopoint-based family of sizing.

Mondopoint cm • Same as JP

Brazil (BR)

Brazilian sizes are approximately US + 2. Based on the French point system with regional variations. Note: our BR conversion uses this approximation, not a full BR lookup table.

French point variant • ≈ US + 2 (approx.)

Korea (KR)

Uses millimeters instead of centimeters. A KR 270 equals JP 27 (27 cm foot length). Simple and precise.

Mondopoint mm • KR = JP × 10

How to Measure Your Foot

Step-by-step guide for finding your exact foot length

1. Stand on Paper

Place a sheet of paper against a wall. Stand on it with your heel touching the wall. Wear the socks you'd normally wear with shoes.

2. Mark the Longest Toe

Use a pen to mark the tip of your longest toe (which isn't always the big toe). Keep the pen perpendicular to the paper.

3. Measure in CM

Use a ruler to measure from the edge of the paper (heel) to the mark (toe) in centimeters. This is your foot length.

4. Measure Both Feet

Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other. Always use the larger measurement for sizing.

5. Measure in the Evening

Feet swell throughout the day, so evening measurements give the most practical and comfortable size for everyday wear.

For the most accurate results, measure your feet while standing (not sitting) with your full weight distributed evenly. A Brannock device at a shoe store can also give you a precise measurement.

Common Shoe Size Conversion Mistakes

Pitfalls to avoid when converting between international shoe sizing systems

Ignoring brand variation

A US 10 in Nike can feel different from a US 10 in Adidas. Conversion charts give standard equivalents, but brands use different lasts (foot molds).

Not accounting for width

Size conversions are based on length only. If you have wide or narrow feet, you may need to size up or down regardless of the conversion.

Confusing men's and women's

A women's US 10 is NOT the same as a men's US 10. Women's sizes run about 1.5 sizes higher (women's 10 ≈ men's 8.5).

Assuming EU sizes are fully unisex

While the EU numbering is technically unisex, the shoe shape (last) still differs between men's and women's shoes at the same EU size.

Using old shoes as reference

Shoe sizes can change over time. Your feet change shape with age, and sizing standards evolve. Always re-measure periodically.
