What Is a Sod Calculator?
Estimate how much sod you need for your lawn project
A Sod Calculator helps homeowners, landscapers, and contractors estimate the amount of sod needed for a lawn project. By entering your lawn's dimensions and shape, it calculates the total area, the number of pallets (or rolls and slabs) needed, the total weight, and the estimated cost.
Sod is sold by the pallet, roll, or slab — not by the square foot directly. A standard pallet covers approximately 450 square feet (varies by grass type). This calculator automatically converts your lawn area into the right number of pallets, rolls, and slabs, with an adjustable waste factor for cuts and curves.
How to Measure Your Lawn for Sod
A simple 4-step process for accurate measurements
Sketch your lawn
Draw a rough outline of your lawn on paper. Break it into simple shapes — rectangles, triangles, circles, and L-shapes. Label each section.
Measure each section
Use a measuring tape or wheel. For rectangles, measure length and width. For triangles, measure base and height. For circles, measure the diameter (across the center).
Enter measurements into the calculator
Select the shape, enter dimensions, and add the number of areas of that shape. The calculator handles all the math.
Add 5–10% waste
Always order extra for cuts around curves, trees, flower beds, and fitting odd spaces. The waste slider above does this automatically.
How Is Sod Quantity Calculated?
The formula and methodology explained
The calculation follows a straightforward process: area per shape → total area → add waste → divide by coverage per unit → round up.
Formulas by shape:
Rectangle: Area = Length × Width
Triangle: Area = ½ × Base × Height
Circle: Area = π × Radius²
L-Shape: Area = (Length × Width) − (Cutout Length × Cutout Width)
Final calculation:
Total Area = Shape Area × Number of Areas × (1 + Waste%)
Pallets = ⌈ Total Area ÷ Coverage per Pallet ⌉ (rounded up)
Example:
A rectangular lawn measuring 50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 ft²
- With 10% waste: 1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100 ft²
- Bermuda sod (450 ft² per pallet): 1,100 ÷ 450 = 2.44 → 3 pallets
- Rolls (10 ft² each): 1,100 ÷ 10 = 110 rolls
- Weight: 3 pallets × ~1,800 lbs = ~5,400 lbs (2.7 tons)
Sod Types & Pallet Coverage Guide
Coverage and weight vary by grass type
| Type | Coverage/Pallet | Weight/Pallet | Best Climate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bermuda | 450 ft² | ~1,800 lbs | Warm (zones 7–10) |
| St. Augustine | 450 ft² | ~2,500 lbs | Warm, humid (zones 8–10) |
| Zoysia | 450 ft² | ~1,800 lbs | Warm, transition (zones 6–9) |
| Fescue | 500 ft² | ~1,800 lbs | Cool (zones 3–7) |
| Centipede | 450 ft² | ~1,800 lbs | Warm, acidic (zones 7–9) |
| Kentucky Bluegrass | 550 ft² | ~1,500 lbs | Cool (zones 3–7) |
Sod Cost Guide
Per-pallet pricing by grass type
Sod prices vary by grass type, region, and season. Here are approximate US price ranges (2026):
Delivery fees typically range from $50–$150 depending on distance and order size. Some suppliers offer free delivery for orders over a minimum quantity.
Buying by the pallet is significantly cheaper per square foot than buying individual rolls or slabs. A full pallet order typically saves 20–40% compared to piece-by-piece pricing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Pitfalls that can cost you time and money
Skipping the waste factor
Ordering exact square footage without 5–10% extra for cuts and curves leads to running short. Partial pallet re-orders cost more and may not match in color.
Wrong grass type for climate
Planting a warm-season grass like Bermuda in a northern climate, or cool-season Fescue in the desert south, leads to dead grass and wasted money.
Not preparing soil before laying
Sod laid on hard, compacted soil without tilling or compost won't root properly. Roots need loose soil 4–6 inches deep to establish.
Forgetting to round up pallets
You can't buy 2.4 pallets. Always round up to the nearest whole pallet. The leftover pieces can be used for patching or small areas later.
Pro Tips for Buying and Laying Sod
Expert advice for a healthy, long-lasting lawn
Order fresh, install immediately
Sod is perishable. Install within 24 hours of delivery (12 hours in hot weather). Plan delivery for the day you're ready to lay.
Schedule delivery carefully
Coordinate delivery with your installation timeline. Most suppliers deliver early morning. Have your soil prepped and tools ready before the truck arrives.
Prepare soil thoroughly
Till 4–6 inches deep, remove debris, add compost, rake smooth, and lightly water. Good soil prep is the #1 factor in sod success — it's worth the extra effort.
Stagger the seams
Lay sod in a brick-like pattern with staggered joints. Push pieces tightly together — gaps cause edges to dry out and create visible lines.
Measure twice, order once
Double-check all measurements. Sod is custom-harvested and non-returnable. Under-ordering means delays, and the second batch may not match the first in color.
Water deeply, then consistently
Water within 30 minutes of laying. First watering should soak through the sod into the soil below (~1 inch). Keep moist for 2 weeks, then gradually reduce frequency.
