What Is a Stellium in Astrology?
Understanding concentrated planetary energy in your birth chart
A stellium is a cluster of three or more planets concentrated in a single zodiac sign or house in your birth chart. This concentration creates a powerful focal point of energy, amplifying the themes and qualities of that sign or house in your life.
Why Stelliums Matter
While most people have planets spread across several signs and houses, a stellium concentrates multiple planetary energies in one area. The sign or house containing the stellium becomes a dominant theme in your personality, life experiences, and personal growth path. Stelliums are relatively uncommon, making them a significant feature when they appear in a chart.
There are two types of stelliums: sign stelliums (planets in the same zodiac sign) and house stelliums (planets in the same astrological house). A sign stellium reveals concentrated character traits, while a house stellium highlights a dominant life area. It's possible to have both simultaneously if the sign and house overlap, or to have them in different positions.
How to Find Your Stellium
Step-by-step guide using this calculator
Finding your stellium requires calculating all 10 planetary positions in your birth chart and identifying clusters. This calculator uses NASA JPL ephemeris data via the astronomy-engine library for scientifically accurate positions.

Sign and house stelliums with strength ratings, interpretations, and element balance
3+ Planets (Standard)
- Traditional astrological definition
- More sensitive — catches smaller clusters
- Includes Sun and Moon as planets
- Used by most Western astrologers
4+ Planets (Strict)
- Modern stricter interpretation
- Filters for stronger concentrations
- Some exclude Sun and Moon (we include them)
- Preferred by evolutionary astrologers
Sign Stelliums vs House Stelliums
Two types of planetary clusters with different meanings
| Aspect | Sign Stellium | House Stellium |
|---|---|---|
| Represents | Character traits and qualities | Life areas and experiences |
| Reveals | How you express energy | Where you focus energy |
| Example | Leo stellium = creative, expressive | 10th house = career-focused |
| Birth Time | Not required | Required (depends on Ascendant) |
| Changes With | Tropical vs Sidereal system | Birth time and house system |
Can You Have Both?
Yes. A sign stellium and house stellium can overlap when the stellium planets are in the same sign and same house. In the Whole Sign house system used by this calculator, this is quite common. In other systems (Placidus, Koch), sign and house boundaries can differ, producing distinct stelliums.
Personal vs Outer Planets in Stelliums
Why the type of planet in your stellium matters
Not all stelliums carry the same weight. A stellium with personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) is more individually significant than one composed entirely of outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto).
| Planet | Type | Orbit | Stellium Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☉ Sun | Personal | 1 year | Core identity, ego |
| ☽ Moon | Personal | 27 days | Emotions, instincts |
| ☿ Mercury | Personal | 88 days | Communication, thinking |
| ♀ Venus | Personal | 225 days | Love, values, aesthetics |
| ♂ Mars | Personal | 1.9 years | Drive, action, desire |
| ♃ Jupiter | Social | 12 years | Expansion, beliefs |
| ♄ Saturn | Social | 29 years | Structure, discipline |
| ♅ Uranus | Generational | 84 years | Innovation, disruption |
| ♆ Neptune | Generational | 165 years | Dreams, spirituality |
| ♇ Pluto | Generational | 248 years | Transformation, power |
Generational Stelliums
Outer planets move so slowly that entire generations share the same placements. A stellium of only Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto reflects a generational theme, not a personal one. This calculator's strength rating accounts for this — stelliums with more personal planets score higher because they are uniquely yours.

Common Stellium Misconceptions
What people often get wrong about stelliums
"Everyone has a stellium"
Most people don't. With 10 planets spread across 12 signs, having 3+ in one sign occurs in roughly 20-30% of charts. Having 4+ is around 10-15%. No stellium is the norm.
"A stellium is always positive"
Stelliums amplify energy — both strengths and challenges. A Scorpio stellium gives depth and insight but can also intensify obsessive or controlling tendencies. Balance comes from how you work with the energy.
"Planets must be conjunct for a stellium"
The planets only need to be in the same sign (or house) — they don't need to be within orb of conjunction. However, tighter clusters where planets are close in degrees tend to feel more intense.
"Sidereal and Tropical give the same stelliums"
Due to the ~24° difference between Tropical and Sidereal zodiac systems, planets near the end of a sign in Tropical may fall in the previous sign in Sidereal. This can create, remove, or shift stelliums entirely.
