Measure chest at the fullest point under your arms. Measure waist at the natural waistline. Sleeve length is measured from the center back of your neck, across the shoulder, down to the wrist bone. Height determines your jacket length (Short, Regular, Long, Extra Long) and pants inseam.

How Suit Sizes Work

Understanding the relationship between body measurements and suit sizes

Suit sizes consist of two parts: a number and a letter. The number represents your chest measurement in inches (e.g., 40), and the letter indicates jacket length — S (Short), R (Regular), L (Long), or XL (Extra Long). So a "40R" means a 40-inch chest in regular length. Different countries use different numbering: US/UK use chest inches, while EU and Italian sizes add 10 to the US number.

Suit pants are sized separately by waist measurement. The "drop" — the difference between jacket and pants size — varies by brand (typically 6 inches). This calculator provides both jacket and pants sizing independently for the best possible fit.

How to Take Accurate Measurements

Step-by-step measurement guide for finding your suit size

1. Chest

Wear a dress shirt (not a thick layer). Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under the armpits. Keep it level and snug — you should be able to fit one finger between tape and body.

2. Waist

Measure at your natural waistline, at or just below the belly button, where you wear your trousers. Stand relaxed and don't suck in. The tape should be snug but comfortable.

3. Sleeve Length (Reference)

Bend your arm slightly. Have someone measure from the center back of your neck, across the shoulder point, down the outside of the arm to the wrist bone. This does not affect your size — it is recorded for alteration reference.

4. Tips for Accuracy

Measure over a dress shirt, not a thick sweater. Stand straight with arms at your sides. Have a friend help with sleeve measurement. Measure twice for consistency.

International Suit Sizing Systems

How US, UK, EU, and Italian suit sizes compare

Suit sizing varies by region. A US 40 jacket has different labels in European and Italian systems. Understanding these conversions is essential when shopping from international brands.

US & UK Sizes

US and UK suit sizes are identical and based directly on chest measurement in inches. A 40 jacket means a 40-inch chest. This is the most intuitive system.

European (EU) Sizes

EU sizes add 10 to the US size. A US 40 is an EU 50. European brands like Hugo Boss and Zegna use this system. Sizes go up in increments of 2.

Italian Sizes

Italian sizes are the same as EU sizes (US + 10). A US 40 is an IT 50. Brands like Armani, Canali, and Brioni use Italian sizing.

Jacket Length

Length is separate from size and based on height. Short (up to 5'9"), Regular (5'10"–6'0"), Long (6'1"–6'3"), Extra Long (6'4"+). Not all lengths are available in all sizes.

Common Suit Sizing Mistakes

Avoid these pitfalls when determining your suit size

Measuring over a jacket or coat

Always measure over a dress shirt only. Measuring over a jacket or thick sweater can add 2-4 inches to your chest measurement, resulting in a suit that's far too large.

Confusing jacket size with shirt size

Dress shirt sizes (e.g., 15.5/34) measure neck and sleeve. Suit jacket sizes (e.g., 40R) measure chest and length. They are completely different systems.

Ignoring jacket length

A 40R and 40L are very different jackets. The wrong length means the jacket hem sits too high or low on your hips. Always factor in your height when selecting a suit.

Buying to match current weight goals

Buy a suit that fits your body now, not the body you plan to have. A well-fitting suit today looks better than an ill-fitting one you hope to grow into or slim into.

About the Suit Size Calculator

How suit size calculation works using body measurements

This calculator determines your suit size by matching your chest and waist measurements against standard size charts compiled from major suit retailers (Brooks Brothers, SuitSupply, Hugo Boss) with alignment to industry sizing conventions. It supports three international sizing systems (US/UK, EU, IT), provides jacket length recommendations based on height, and offers both measurement-based and height/weight-based calculation modes. Results include jacket size with length code, pants waist and inseam, between-size guidance, and complete international size charts for reference.
