How Tip is Calculated

Basic formula for computing tip amount and total

A tip is calculated as a percentage of your bill. The basic formula is:

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)
Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip, making the total $60.

Splitting the Bill

How to divide tip and total evenly among a group

When splitting among multiple people, simply divide both the tip and total by the number of people:

Per Person Tip = Total Tip ÷ Number of People
Per Person Total = Total Bill ÷ Number of People

Some people prefer to round each person's share to avoid dealing with small change. Use the rounding toggle to round per-person amounts up to convenient increments like $0.05, $0.10, or $1.00 (or equivalent in your currency).

When to Exclude Tax from Tip

Why tipping on the pre-tax subtotal may be preferred

In some regions, it's customary to calculate tip based on the pre-tax amount. The reasoning: tax goes to the government, not the server, so why tip on it?

When you enter a tax amount, the calculator automatically excludes it from the tip calculation. The tip percentage is applied to the bill amount minus the tax, which typically results in a slightly lower tip amount.

Tip Base = Bill Amount − Tax Amount
Tip = Tip Base × Tip Percentage

Whether or not to tip on tax is a personal preference. Both approaches are acceptable.

Service Charge Already Included

Handling bills with a built-in gratuity or service fee

Many establishments, especially in certain countries or for large parties, add an automatic service charge (often 10-18%) to your bill. This is essentially a pre-included tip.

When using "Service Included" mode, enter your total bill and the service charge percentage. The calculator will show you what the original base price was and how much service was added.

Base Price = Bill Total ÷ (1 + Service% ÷ 100)
Service Amount = Bill Total − Base Price

You can optionally add an extra tip on top of the service charge if you received exceptional service.

Rounding Options

Round per-person amounts for easier payment

Rounding can make payment easier by avoiding odd cents when splitting the bill. When enabled, the calculator rounds per-person amounts up to the nearest increment you choose.

How it works: The calculator rounds each person's share up to the nearest increment (e.g., $0.05, $0.10, $1.00), then recalculates the total from the rounded per-person amounts. This ensures everyone pays a clean, round amount.

Currency-aware increments: The available rounding increments automatically adjust based on your selected currency. For example, USD and INR offer increments like $0.01, $0.05, $0.10, while JPY offers whole number increments like ¥1, ¥5, ¥10.

Note: When rounding per-person amounts, the sum of individual payments may slightly differ from the exact total due to rounding. The calculator will show a warning when this happens, indicating that one person may need to pay a few cents more or less.

Tipping Customs Vary by Country

Regional etiquette for gratuity around the world

Tipping customs vary significantly around the world:

  • USA/Canada: 15-20% is standard for restaurants
  • UK/Europe: 10-15% is common, service charge often included
  • Japan/China: Tipping can be considered rude
  • India: 10% is appreciated, but not mandatory
  • Australia: Tipping is optional, 10% for good service

Always check local customs when traveling. When in doubt, ask your server or look for "Service Included" on the bill.
