Input length, width, diameter, or base/height depending on your shape. Add the material depth — common depths are 2–4 inches for gravel and 3–6 inches for asphalt.

Core Formula
Tonnage = (Area × Depth) × Density ÷ 2,000
Area is calculated by shape: Rectangle = L×W, Circle = π×(D÷2)², Triangle = ½×B×H. Depth must be in feet (divide inches by 12). Density is in lbs/ft³. Divide by 2,000 to convert pounds to short tons, or by 2,204.62 for metric tonnes.

Always order extra. Spillage, uneven ground, and compaction reduce effective coverage. For irregular shapes, use 10–15% waste.
Know Your Tons: Short vs Metric
US short ton = 2,000 lbs. Metric tonne = 2,204 lbs. Confirm which unit your supplier uses — a 10% difference can mean an extra delivery.
Measure Twice, Order Once
Break complex areas into rectangles, circles, and triangles. Calculate each section and sum the results. Round up, not down.
Account for Compaction
Compacted gravel weighs ~15% more than loose. If your material will be mechanically compacted, enable the compaction toggle.

Forgetting the Waste Factor
Ordering exact calculated tonnage almost always results in a shortfall. Second delivery fees often exceed the cost of 5% extra material.
Confusing Cubic Yards with Tons
Yards measure volume; tons measure weight. Different materials have different densities — 1 yd³ of gravel ≠ 1 ton. Always convert using the correct density.
Ignoring Moisture Content
Wet sand can weigh 20% more than dry sand. If ordering after heavy rain or for underwater use, factor in moisture weight.
Using Inches for Depth in Formulas
