What Is Vastu Shastra?
The ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial harmony
Vastu Shastra (literally “science of architecture”) is an ancient Indian system of design principles that aims to harmonize a building with the natural forces of the universe. Rooted in the Sthapatyaveda (a part of the Atharvaveda), Vastu integrates the five elements — Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space — with the eight cardinal directions to create spaces that promote health, prosperity, and well-being.

How the Vastu Score Works
Direction-based scoring system for each room in your home
Each room is evaluated against its ideal Vastu direction on a scale of 0–10. A room placed in its ideal direction scores 10/10, while a room in the worst direction scores as low as 3/10. Your overall Vastu score is the percentage of total points earned out of the maximum possible.
Overall Score Formula
Vastu Score = (Sum of Room Scores / Maximum Possible) × 100
Worked Example
- Kitchen in SE: 10/10
- Bedroom in SW: 10/10
- Living Room in N: 9/10
- Bathroom in NE: 3/10
- Pooja in NE: 10/10
Result
- Total scored: 42 / 50
- Vastu Score: 84%
- Grade: Excellent
Scores 80+ are Excellent, 60–79 Good, 40–59 Average, below 40 Needs Improvement.
What Is Ayadi Shadvarga?
Six classical formulas that evaluate building dimensions for auspiciousness
Ayadi Shadvarga is a set of six ancient mathematical formulas from Vastu Shastra. They use the building's length, breadth, and height — converted to Hasta units (1 Hasta = 1.5 feet) — to determine whether the dimensions are auspicious for the occupants.
The Critical Rule
Aaya (Income) must be greater than Vyaya (Expenditure)
| Formula | Calculation | Auspicious When | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aaya | Length × 8 mod 8 | Remainder is odd (1, 3, 5, 7) | |
| Vyaya | Breadth × 9 mod 10 | Remainder is less than Aaya | |
| Yoni | Breadth × 3 mod 8 | Remainder is odd (1, 3, 5, 7) | |
| Nakshatra | Length × 8 mod 27 | Falls in a favorable Nakshatra | |
| Vara | Height × 9 mod 7 | Falls on an auspicious weekday | |
| Tithi | Height × 9 mod 30 | Falls on a favorable lunar day |
Ideal Room Directions as Per Vastu
Where each room should be placed for maximum Vastu compliance
| Room | Best Direction | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Southeast | Fire element zone — ideal for cooking and heat | |
| Master Bedroom | Southwest | Earth element — promotes stability and rest | |
| Living Room | North / NE | Prosperity zone — welcoming and bright | |
| Pooja Room | Northeast | Spiritual energy — purest directional zone | |
| Bathroom | NW / West | Air element — supports water drainage flow | |
| Main Entrance | North / East | Positive energy entry — auspicious and welcoming | |
| Study / Office | East / North | Knowledge zone — enhances focus and learning | |
| Staircase | Southwest | Heavy structure suits the earth-element corner |
Ideal Room Sizes as Per Vastu
Recommended dimensions, ratios, and minimum areas for each room type
Key Sizing Rules
- Ideal length-to-width ratio is 1:1.5 for most rooms.
- Both dimensions should be either even or odd — mixing disrupts energy flow.
- Always use inner wall-to-wall measurements.
| Room | Min Area | Ideal Size | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living Room | 170 sq.ft | 18' × 12' | 1:1.5 |
| Bedroom | 130 sq.ft | 15' × 12' | 1:1.25 |
| Kitchen | 80 sq.ft | 12' × 10' | 1:1.25 |
| Pooja Room | 35 sq.ft | 7' × 5' | 1:1.4 |
| Bathroom | 40 sq.ft | 8' × 5' | 1:1.6 |
What Is Brahmasthan?
The sacred geometric center of your home
Brahmasthan is the geometric center of your home, representing the navel of the Vastu Purusha (the cosmic being whose body forms the foundation of Vastu principles). Divide your floor plan into a 3×3 grid — the center zone is the Brahmasthan. For greater precision, use the 8×8 grid (64 padas) where the central four cells form the Brahmasthan.
Keep this zone open, well-lit, and clutter-free.
Never place toilets, kitchens, pillars, or staircases here.
Traditional homes used an open courtyard (aangan). Modern alternatives: skylight, tulsi plant, or simply keeping it clear.
Common Vastu Mistakes
Placements to avoid and their remedies
Toilet in Northeast
The most inauspicious placement. NE is the water/spiritual zone and must be kept open and clean. Remedy: use a sea-salt bowl and keep the door closed.
Kitchen in Northeast
Fire element clashes with the water energy of the northeast. If unavoidable, place the stove in the SE corner of the kitchen and use blue or green decor.
Blocked Brahmasthan
The center of the home should never have pillars, heavy furniture, walls, or a toilet. Keep it open or place a small indoor plant.
Staircase in Northeast
Creates heavy energy in a zone that should be light and open. Southwest is the ideal staircase location.
Main door facing Southwest
Associated with instability and financial stress. Remedy: add bright lighting, an auspicious nameplate, and a threshold (chaukhat).
About the Vastu Calculator
How this calculator works and what data it uses
This calculator evaluates your home or property using four Vastu Shastra analysis modes. The Vastu Score mode rates each room's direction against classical ideal placements (0–10 per room, 0–100 overall). The Ayadi Calculator applies six ancient Shadvarga formulas to your building's dimensions (converted to Hasta units) to determine auspiciousness. The Room Size checker evaluates length-to-width ratio, area, and dimension parity against Vastu standards. The Brahmasthan finder calculates the sacred center zone of your plot using 3×3 or 8×8 grid systems. All scoring is based on classical Vastu Shastra texts and widely accepted directional principles.
