Data source: Subject scaling values are approximate averages derived from historical VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) scaling reports. Actual scaling varies each year with cohort performance. Aggregate-to-ATAR conversion is an approximation of the VTAC conversion table.

How to Use This ATAR Calculator
Step-by-step instructions to estimate your VCE ATAR
This calculator estimates your ATAR using your VCE study scores and approximate subject scaling based on VTAC patterns. Follow these steps for the most accurate estimate:
VCE (Victoria) provides the most accurate estimates with approximate subject-level scaling. HSC, QCE, WACE, and SACE give rough estimates only — these use a simplified normalisation model without state-specific scaling.
Select the VCE subjects you studied or plan to study. Subjects marked (+n) typically scale up; those with (-n) scale down.
Use raw study scores (0–50 for VCE). Enter trial exam results, SAC averages, or target scores to explore different scenarios.
Your best English subject counts at 100%. The next 3 highest permissible scaled scores also count at 100%. Any 5th and 6th subjects add 10% of their scaled score each.
Your estimated ATAR is mapped to typical university entry requirements to help you gauge which courses may be within reach.
What Is the ATAR?
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank explained
The ATAR is a percentile ranking (0 to 99.95) indicating your academic achievement relative to all Year 12 students in your state. It is used by universities across Australia as the primary criterion for course admission.

How Subject Scaling Works
Why some subjects contribute more to your ATAR than others
Scaling adjusts raw study scores to fairly compare students across subjects with different difficulty levels and cohort strengths. A study score of 35 in a high-scaling subject can contribute more to your aggregate than 35 in a low-scaling subject.
Scales Up
Specialist Maths (+7), Methods (+5), Chemistry (+3), Physics (+3), Latin (+6), Languages
Scales Down
Studio Arts (-5), Media (-4), Physical Education (-4), Further Maths (-3), Business Mgmt (-3)
VCE ATAR Calculation Formula
The VTAC method for computing your aggregate from study scores
VTAC calculates your ATAR from your aggregate score, which is derived from your scaled VCE study scores according to three rules:
VTAC requires at least one English-group subject (English, English Language, Literature, or EAL) counted in your primary four at 100%. Your best English-group scaled score is automatically included first.
After your best English subject, the next three highest permissible scaled study scores count in full (100%).
Any remaining eligible 5th and 6th subjects contribute just 10% of their scaled score to your aggregate. For example, a scaled score of 40 adds only 4.0.
The aggregate is mapped to an ATAR rank (0–99.95) using VTAC's annual conversion table based on the Year 12 cohort distribution.
Worked VCE Example
A step-by-step walkthrough using realistic study scores
Suppose a student takes English, Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Chemistry, Physics, and Economics with the following raw scores:
| Subject | Raw | Scaling | Scaled |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 35 | 0 | 35.0 |
| Specialist Maths | 38 | +7 | 44.2 |
| Maths Methods | 40 | +5 | 45.0 |
| Chemistry | 35 | +3 | 37.1 |
| Physics | 34 | +3 | 35.9 |
| Economics | 36 | +2 | 37.5 |
English (35.0 × 1.0) = 35.0
Methods 45.0 + Specialist 44.2 + Economics 37.5
Chemistry 37.1 × 0.1 = 3.7 + Physics 35.9 × 0.1 = 3.6
This student would be competitive for Commerce, IT, and Science programs at most Australian universities.
Non-VCE Estimates: Accuracy & Limitations
What to know about HSC, QCE, WACE, and SACE results
This calculator is optimised for VCE with approximate subject scaling based on VTAC patterns. Non-VCE states use a simplified normalisation model without state-specific scaling. Here are the limitations by state:
UAC applies its own scaling algorithm to HSC marks. Our calculator does not replicate UAC scaling. Treat as ballpark estimate only. Visit UAC for accurate guidance.
QTAC uses inter-subject scaling (ISS). Our calculator does not replicate QTAC scaling. Treat as ballpark estimate only. Visit QTAC for accurate guidance.
TISC moderates and scales WACE scores. Our calculator does not replicate TISC scaling. Treat as ballpark estimate only. Visit TISC for accurate guidance.
SATAC scales SACE grades with its own process. Our calculator does not replicate SATAC scaling. Treat as ballpark estimate only. Visit SATAC for accurate guidance.
Accuracy and Limitations
What this calculator can and cannot do
This ATAR calculator is designed to help you plan and estimate, not to provide guaranteed predictions. Here are the key limitations to keep in mind:
Scaling values are approximate, based on historical VTAC patterns. Actual scaling varies each year with cohort performance. Use this calculator for general guidance and scenario exploration.
Only VTAC, UAC, QTAC, TISC, and SATAC can calculate official ATARs using their proprietary algorithms. Consult your school's VCE coordinator for targeted guidance.
VTAC limits how many subjects from the same study area group (e.g. Mathematics) can count in your primary four. This calculator does not enforce those restrictions.
