What is CGPA?

Understanding Cumulative Grade Point Average

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all your semester GPAs (SGPAs) across your entire academic career. It represents your overall academic performance and is used by universities, employers, and graduate programs for evaluation.

Unlike a single semester GPA, CGPA accounts for the varying number of credits in each semester, giving a more accurate picture of sustained performance.

How to Calculate CGPA

Step-by-step formula and example

CGPA is calculated by taking the weighted average of all semester SGPAs, where the weight is the number of credits in each semester.

CGPA = Σ(SGPAi × Creditsi) ÷ Σ(Creditsi)

Example: Semester 1 (SGPA 8.5, 24 credits) + Semester 2 (SGPA 8.2, 22 credits) + Semester 3 (SGPA 7.8, 26 credits).

Total Grade Points = (8.5 × 24) + (8.2 × 22) + (7.8 × 26) = 204 + 180.4 + 202.8 = 587.2
Total Credits = 24 + 22 + 26 = 72
CGPA = 587.2 ÷ 72 = 8.16

How to Calculate Percentage from CGPA

Conversion formulas for different grading scales

Common approximate conversion factors used by this calculator (actual factors may vary by institution):

CGPA to percentage conversion factors by grading scale
Grading ScaleFactorExample
10-Point (India)× 9.58.5 CGPA = 80.75%
4.0 Scale (US/UK)× 253.5 GPA = 87.5%
5.0 Scale× 204.2 CGPA = 84%

Note: The 9.5 multiplier is the AICTE standard used by most Indian engineering colleges. Some universities use different conversion factors — always check your institution's official guidelines.

SGPA vs CGPA: What's the Difference?

Understanding semester and cumulative averages

SGPA (Semester GPA)

Grade point average for a single semester. Calculated from individual subject grades and credits within that semester only.

CGPA (Cumulative GPA)

Weighted average of all SGPAs across all semesters completed. Represents your overall academic standing throughout your degree.

Your SGPA may fluctuate from semester to semester, but your CGPA provides a smoothed, overall picture. Employers and graduate schools primarily look at your final CGPA.

Tips to Improve Your CGPA

Practical strategies for better academic performance

Focus on high-credit subjects

Subjects with more credits have a larger impact on your CGPA. Prioritize study time for courses carrying 4–5 credits over 1–2 credit courses.

Start strong in early semesters

Your first few semesters have the biggest impact on CGPA. A high early CGPA creates a buffer that's easier to maintain than recover from a low start.

Calculate target SGPA for each semester

Use this calculator to determine what SGPA you need in upcoming semesters to reach your target CGPA. Work backward from your goal.
