How to calculate negative marking
The formula, explained with worked examples for common exam patterns
Final Score = Correct × marks per correct − Wrong × negative marks per wrong
Skipped (unanswered) questions get 0 — no penalty for leaving a question blank
Suppose an exam has +4 for correct and −1 for wrong. If you get 60 correct and 20 wrong:
60 × 4 − 20 × 1 = 240 − 20 = 220
Penalty per wrong = 1/3 of the correct mark. For +3/−1 (CAT pattern):
40 × 3 − 10 × 1 = 120 − 10 = 110
Penalty per wrong = 1/4 of the correct mark. For +1/−0.25 (IBPS PO, CLAT):
65 × 1 − 15 × 0.25 = 65 − 3.75 = 61.25
180 questions with +4 for correct, −1 for wrong. Skipped = 0.
150 × 4 − 30 × 1 = 600 − 30 = 570
+2 for correct, −0.66 (−2/3) for wrong. Strategic skipping is key — penalty is ~1/3 of the positive mark.
70 × 2 − 10 × 0.66 = 140 − 6.6 = 133.4
Why this calculator is different
What makes this calculator unique and powerful
Plug in presets for JEE, NEET, UPSC, SSC, GATE, CAT, IBPS, RRB, CUET, NDA, or CLAT — or use custom mode for any exam worldwide.
The what-if slider shows exactly how many marks you leak to penalties and how much you recover by skipping guesses.
The reverse calculator tells you how many questions to attempt for a target score at your current accuracy.
Donut chart for correct/wrong/skipped breakdown and an accuracy zone meter to keep you in the right risk band.
Preparation Phase: Strategy Lockdown
Build your personalized exam strategy during study time
Input your average accuracy from the last 3 mocks to get realistic projections.
Use the what-if slider to find when penalties exceed 15% of your gross score.
Memorize how many skips you can afford and still hit your target score.
Lower accuracy by 10% to see if you still clear the cutoff. If not, plan to attempt fewer risky questions.
Build your strategy during preparation, not on exam day
Exam Day: Mental Preparation
Mental checklist for confidence and focus on exam day
Remind yourself: "Skipping is part of the plan. I have a budget for hard questions."
If the paper is harder than mocks, the target attempt rate naturally drops. Adapt, don't force.
Scan the entire paper first. Don't chase attempt count - chase the easy marks you know.
No more math or calculations. Trust the strategy you built during preparation. Stay calm.
