How Are Retaining Wall Blocks Calculated?
The formula behind every estimate — transparent and verifiable
The calculation works row by row: determine how many blocks fit along the wall length, how many rows stack to reach your height, then multiply. Buried courses are added for below-grade stability. Curved walls use arc length; fire pits use circumference.
Blocks per Row
Blocks/Row = ⌈Wall Length ÷ Block Length⌉
Standard blocks are 16″ long. For a 20 ft wall: 20 ÷ (16÷12) = ⌈15⌉ = 15 blocks per row. Curved walls: use arc length instead. Fire pits: use π × diameter.
Number of Rows
Rows = ⌈Wall Height ÷ Block Height⌉ + Buried Courses
Standard blocks are 8″ high. For a 4 ft wall: (48 ÷ 8) = 6 visible rows + 1 buried = 7 rows. Always bury at least 10% of wall height below grade.
Wall Blocks
Wall Blocks = Blocks/Row × Rows × (1 + Waste%)
For our 20′ × 4′ example: 15 × 7 = 105 wall blocks. Add 5% waste = 111. Cap blocks (+21) are added separately for the total 132 blocks shown in the result.
Gravel & Drainage
Base Gravel = Base Depth(ft) × Base Width(ft) × Length(ft) ÷ 27 cu yd
Backfill = Backfill Depth × Wall Height × Wall Length ÷ 27 cu yd. Convert to tons by multiplying cu yd × 1.4. Drainage pipe runs the full wall length.
Worked Example: 20′ × 4′ Straight Wall, Standard Blocks, 1 Buried Course
- Blocks/Row = ⌈20 ÷ 1.333⌉ = 15 blocks
- Rows = ⌈48″ ÷ 8″⌉ + 1 buried = 7 rows
- Wall Blocks = 15 × 7 = 105 exact × 1.05 waste = 111 + 21 cap = 132 total
- Base Gravel (exact) = 0.5′ × 2′ × 20′ ÷ 27 = 0.74 cu yd
- Backfill (exact) = 1′ depth × 4′ height × 20′ length ÷ 27 = 2.96 cu yd
